Fentanly Patches – FenSpar / Fen-Touch

Description:

FenSpar is a transdermal therapeutic patch containing the active pharmaceutical ingredient Fentanyl. It is about 100 times more potent than Morphine, and a strong pain medication for moderate to severe chronic pain.

FenSpar delivers Fentanyl into the body through the skin at the designated rate, reaching efficient blood level within a few hours after the application. The pain is relieved for up to 72 hours; therefore, it becomes the first drug of choice in cancer pain management therapy.

FenSpar is available in following strengths

Strength Fentanyl per patch Patch Size
12.5 mcg/hr 1.25 mg 5cm2
25 mcg/hr 2.5 mg 10cm2
50 mcg/hr 5.0 mg 20cm2
75 mcg/hr 7.5 mg 30cm2
100 mcg/hr 10.0 mg 40cm2

Indication:

FenSpar (Fentanyl transdermal patch) is indicated in the management of chronic intractable pain that requires continuous opioid analgesia.

Initial Dose:

The appropriate initiating dose of FenSpar should be based on the patient's current opioid use. It is recommended that FenSpar should be used in patients who have demonstrated opioid tolerance. Other factors to be considered are the current general condition and medical status of the patient, including body size, age and extent of debilitation as well as degree of opioid tolerance.

Precautions:

  • Application site is preferably void of hair, and must be clean and dry. Wash the site before applying patch
  • Do not apply FenSpar to damaged areas (irritated, injured, cut area of the skin)
  • Do not apply FenSpar where cosmetics such as cream, lotion, gel etc., are already applied
  • Do not apply FenSpar if patch is damaged, opened or peeling
  • FenSpar must be applied only one time. It should not be removed/re-applied; adhesive stickiness is reduced when the FenSpar patch is re-applied
  • After removal of a previous FenSpar patch, the next patch should be applied to a different skin site
  • FenSpar should not be applied when the patient has a fever, because the high body temperature will cause an increased rate of Fentanyl delivery

How to Apply:

  • Tear open the pouch from the opening notch
  • Remove the FenSpar from the Pouch, just before applying it on the skin
  • Peel away one side of the release liner, then place the patch on the skin
  • Remove the remaining side of the release liner and press the patch for 30 seconds with hand to ensure adhesiveness
