Buprenorphine is used to treat any pain that arises out of drug dependency or addiction to opioids. It minimises the withdrawal symptoms in the individual caused by the non-consumption of drugs. Administering the drug to the individual while undergoing withdrawal is difficult and also ineffective for a multitude of reasons. As a result, applying a buprenorphine patch is easier and also more effective since it remains attached to the individual’s body and discharges the drugs from time to time. Depending on the case, the duration and potency of the buprenorphine patch may vary. However, the general principle behind its application remains the same. Few things to make a note of while we apply the patch;
- Use the lowest effective dosage for the shortest duration to test the patient’s reaction
- Monitor the patient's breathing pattern particularly in the first 2-3 days
- If the patient has a history of allergies, let it be known.
- Take the doctor's advice for side effects so you can be ready for it.
- Apply on a flat surface preferably the arm, back, and side of the chest.
- Do not apply the patch where the heart is positioned and also avoid applying the patches on wounds or scratches.
- Do not exert yourself while you are on medication.
- Keep track of time and follow the doctor’s advice down to the dot.

The family members are expected to monitor the patient's progress and encourage him/her to go through it. The role played by the patient’s family is as equally important as the medication. Both are expected to complement each other so the individual undergoing the withdrawal symptoms can come out of it with roaring success.
